GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The main objectives of the Department are:
  • specialists training in the field of Process Control, Applied Informatics and Computers;
  • profound knowledge in automatic control systems field dissemination;
  • development of process control products and technologies.
The Department provides students training specific courses (bachelor degree level) for: Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Petrochemical and Petroleum Processing Technology, Petroleum-Gas Engineering, Letters and Sciences Faculties.
A special place is held by the specific courses dedicated to the studying directions coordinated by the Department, namely: Systems Engineering (Control Engineering and Computers Department), respectively Computer Science and Information Technology (Computer Science). For the master degree level, the Control Engineering and Computers Department initiated (and now coordinates) the Advanced Process Control and Programmable Structures programme. The Department is also involved in similar master programmes within Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Petrochemical and Petroleum Processing Technology Faculties. For the PhD degree level, there are two PhD coordinators in the field of Systems Engineering, namely: Prof. PhD. Eng. Nicolae Paraschiv and Prof. PhD. Eng. Stelian Dumitrescu.
Nowadays, there are more than 25 PhD students both in part-time and full-time training programmes, in different stages of their doctoral research.   The ongoing process of human resources development represents an important component for Department activity. Thus, there were elaborated, authorized and presented the following courses: the postgraduated course on Advanced Process Control, annually since 1992, the ongoing training course Distributed Control Systems, attested since 2005, having Romanian and Vietnamese students.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

This activity is organized in research groups: Process Control, Computer Science, and Robots and Flexible Manufacturing Systems.

Process Control
The group is coordinated by Prof. PhD. Eng. Vasile Cirtoaje and it is composed of: Nicolae Paraschiv, Stelian Dumitrescu, Gheorghe Panaitescu, Cristian Patrascioiu, Sanda Mihalache, Otilia Cangea, Gabriel Radulescu, Alina Baiesu, Cristina Popa, Marian Popescu. The research in process control field had always emphasized the mixing of theoretical investigations with experimental ones to industrial implementation. There have been and are developed process control systems from chemical, petrochemical and energetic industries. Most of the research studies aim the design and implementation of digital control algorithms based on process compensation. Computers Team
The team is led by Prof. PhD. Eng. Nicolae Paraschiv and includes the following members: Vasile Cirtoaje, Gabriel Radulescu, Otilia Cangea, Constantin Stoica, Marius Olteanu, Ioana Georgescu, Silviu Popovici.
The group main research directions refer to: using computers in process control, integrating automation equipments in industrial networks, using QNX environment in control and real-time applications, using microcontrollers in automation projects.
Also, as fundamental research field it has to be emphasized the studies on hardware/software virtualization techniques, revealing complex interactions existing in all operating systems as well as between the operating system and the host hardware platform.

Robots and Flexible Manufacturing Systems
This team is led by Assoc. Prof. PhD. Eng. Adrian Moise and it includes the following members: Gabriela Bucur, Cristina Popescu and Alexandru Georgescu. The goals of the Robots and Flexible Manufacturing Systems team are: introducing modern manufacturing technologies and flexible production in mechanical factories. Research directions include using artificial neural networks and fuzzy structures in manipulation robot control, robot control using visual information, implementing the active vision concept. Our Department also includes the Research Center for Advanced Automation of Chemical Processes, whose activity was attested in no 10, CC-B Certificate, from 11.05.2007, emitted by the National Council of Scientific Research from Higher Education. The Control Engineering and Computers Department organizes every 3 years, under aegis of Romanian Society of Automatics and Technical Informatics, the International Symposium on Process Control, with 5 editions up to now. In time had been developed several research directions, most relevant being the following:
  • design of advanced control structures for industrial plants
  • complex chemical systems modeling and simulation
  • electronic charts generation and automatic ship guiding
  • biometric authentication techniques
  • sensorial control for mobile robots
The research themes approached within recent projects are briefly presented here.
