GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE DEPARTMENT 

The Department was created in 1990 by separation of the Hydraulics, Thermotechnic and Geology Department. This separation took place as a result of the increased number of geological disciplines in the curriculum of the Drilling Faculty, due to the establishment of the Petroleum Geology specialization.

The Department of Geology and Geophysics provides the speciality training of the students from the Faculty of Petroleum engineering, especially for the Petroleum geology specialization, as well as from the Faculty of Petroleum refining and petrochemistry, Environment protection engineering specialization, and from the Faculty of Letters and Sciences, Chemistry-Physics specialization.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Research activities are organized on themes of special importance:

• Geotechnical and land stability studies
• Geochemical study of the hydrocarbons sourse rocks
• Mineralogical and petrographical study of the sourse, reservoir and cap rocks
• Complex interpretations of the geophysical logs
• Prevention of sand clogging
• Stratigraphical and sedimentological studies of some formations with hydrocarbons perspective
• Basin analysys
• Micropaleontology and paleoecology of Cenozoic foraminifera

The research takes place in research groups within the department or/and as interdisciplinary groups comprising members of the teaching staff from other departments or specialized companies.
