OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT

The present Hydraulics, Thermotechnics and Reservoir Engineering Department was founded in Bucharest, being called The Hydraulics Department, at the same time with the founding, in 1948, of the Faculty of Well Drilling and Petroleum Extraction within the Petroleum Gas Institute.
Since it has been established and up to the present, the department has been succesively coordinated by Prof. Dr. Eng. Nicolae Cristea, Prof. Dr. Eng. Veceslav Harnas, Prof. Dr. Doc. Teodor Oroveanu (member of the Romanian Academy), Prof. Dr. Eng. Ion Cretu, Prof. Dr. Eng. Mircea Ionescu, Prof. Dr. Eng. Alexandru Soare.
The department has been functioning with this structure since 1990, when the thermotechnics and thermal equipment and reservoir engineering departments joined the hydraulics department. The department has been coordinated by Prof. Dr. Eng. Marcela Patarlageanu from the thermotechnics team since 2004.

This team is responsible for the training of all students from all faculties, students who attend day courses for 4 years, distance learning students, master degree students, in the following fields: fluid mechanics, fluid transport and storage, fluid movement through porous media, hydrodynamic investigations within the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the Faculty Petroleum and Gas Engineering. Some of the members of the team supervise doctoral dissertations in the Mine, Petroleum and Gas field.

The team is responsible for the training of the students who attend day and dsitance learning courses within the Faculty of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, master degree students and doctoral stages in the Mine, Petroleum and Gas field.

Our department is well known both nationally and internationally as its members have high-qualified knowledge both from the professional and scientific points of view.
The lectures presented to the students at the highest scientific level are based on the books, textbooks, laboratory and project materials, all written by the members of the department, covering all fundamental and specialized subjects in the curricula.

The department possesses the following types of equipment used for calculation and education:

40 PCs;
1 SUN graphic station;
printers;
copy machines;
a GENIUS scanner;
projectors;
videoprojectors.

The technical activity, also very rich, consists in hundreds of feasibility studies, projects, thermoenergetical expertise and analyses, in fields such as: hydrocarbon reservoirs exploitation, oil transport, natual gas transport and distribution, and any other fileds in which thermal energy is consumed. The expertises have refered to some accidents in refineries, faults of transport and distribuition pipelines, explosions etc.
The scientific activity is quantified by over one thousand studies based on research contracts, articles published in specialized magazines, participations in different conferences, licences, doctoral theses etc. The fields approched by the department are: the theoretical fundamenting of some exploitation methods, intelligent systems with neuronal networks used for the optimization of oil and gas reservoir exploitation, research regarding water treatment for its injection in the oil reservoirs in order to increase the efficiency of recovery,reserach regarding the petrophysical properties of hydrocarbon collectors in order to increase the exploitation efficiency theough geophysical methods; multiphasic and newtonian fluid transport (liquid – gas, liquid – solid) through pipelines, optimization of transport networks in steady and unsteady flow state, fluid leakage due to faults of pipelines and their monitorization, the study of fluid storage in underground tanks (depleted reservoirs, cavities made in salt reservoirs) as well as different structural analyses of rocks and fluids that saturate them, thermoenergetical analyses for different types of equipment used in operating areas and refineries, optimization of energy consumption, recoverable energy usage, issues concerning environment engineering etc.
