The mathematics department was founded in 1948, at the same time with the establishment of the Petroleum-Gas Institute. The department, through its members, provides instruction for the mathematical disciplines of the curriculum of all the faculties in the university. A special role in the educational instruction in mathematics is represented by the courses taught for the Mathematics-Informatics and Mathematics specializations, disciplinary branches which function in the Faculty of Letters and Sciences since 1992.

The scientific activity of the department is represented primarily by theoretical and fundamental research; however there is certain scientific interest toward applying theoretical models to real-life problems. The main areas of scientific research interest in the department, grouped by faculty members, are :

• Analysis, Geometry, Algebra
• Theory of linear ordered topological spaces, Operators Theory, Fuzzy topology and fixed-point theorems
• Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis
