GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE DEPARTMENT
The main aims of the department are:
- To train staff into the calculation and building of the petroleum and petrochemical equipment by attending open higher education, master studies and distance learning;
- To plan and improve by up-dating the specific equipment and technologies required in onshore and offshore drilling, production, transport and petrochemical processing.
The department provides qualified university activities both by highly specialized lectures and by modern supplies based on the latest computing technologies. The textbooks edited by our teaching staff are also used by the specialists working in the planning, research and production of the petroleum and petrochemical equipment.
A special place is taken by the scientific research studies that the members of the department thoroughly undertake. The research and development approach focuses on issues required by the engineering plants, the petroleum sites and the petrochemical companies that result into the accomplishment of the research contracts, the editing of numerous articles in specialized magazines, letters patents and doctoral theses.
In future, the members of the department are willing to get involved in solving any issue aroused within the petroleum industry.
The Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment Department is run by the teaching staff Board of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

- Drilling and production equipment;
- Special drilling equipment;
- Hydraulic and pneumatic activities;
- Thermal actions in oil-wells;
- Calculation and building of the petrochemical and refining equipment;
- Pipes and casing;
- Computer-assisted planning;
- Reliability and maintenance of the petroleum and petrochemical equipment;
- Risk management;
The following laboratory equipment is worth mentioning:
- Stalls aimed to ensure the efficiency and the theoretical and experimental investigation of the drilling and drilling production processes and equipment;
- A stall for the dynamic research of the voltage degrees and distortions for extended oil-wells drilling equipment;
- Stalls for the experimental research of the hydro-pneumatic system and transmission performances;
- A stall for the experimental research of the technical and economic effectiveness of the thermal engines within the petroleum system activities;
- Stalls aimed to ensure the experimental establishment of the voltage degrees and distortions within the pressurized technological equipment;
- A stall aimed to ensure the comparative experimental analysis of the voltage degrees emerged in the piping system devices;
- The use of the numerical analyses aimed at assessing the bearing capacity of the equipment;
- A stall for the assessment of the equipment defectiveness.
Interdisciplinary laboratories:
- Laboratory for the control and assessment of the bearing capacity of the petroleum and petrochemical equipment by means of non-destructive examinations,
- Laboratory for experimental and mock processes concerning dynamic and vibrating operations and the diagnosis of the petroleum equipment,
- Laboratory for the supervising, control and assessment of the processing, storing and shipping equipment.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
The research and development activities are organised in research groups: drilling and drilling production equipment, petrochemical and refinery equipment, technical and technological risk management.
- Drilling and production equipment
The group is led by prof. dr. eng. Ion Vlad and brings together the following members of the teaching staff: Alexandru Popovici, Stefan Partenie, Nicolaie Calota, Ion Pana, Corneliu-Dan Ene, Simion Parepa, Petre Savulescu, Marius Stan, Clausia Niculae, Magdalena Zaharia, George Dinu. The main lines of research of this group focus on the planning and diagnosis of the drilling and drilling-production systems, the theoretical and experimental research of the dynamic processes of the petroleum equipment and the experimental analysis of the static and dynamic voltage degrees of the equipment used at oil-wells drilling and hydrocarbons production.
- Petrochemical and refinery equipment
The leader of the group is Prof. dr. eng. Ion Voicu and brings together the following members of the teaching staff: Stefan Partenie, Viorel Nicolae, Ion Pana, Costin Ilinca, Liviu Toader, Ioana Gabriela Stan. The main lines of research of the group focus on the calculation and building of the petrochemical and refining equipment, the calculation and building of the storing equipment and the shipment of the petroleum products and the numerical and experimental analyses concerning the bearing capacity of the technological equipment.
- Technical and technological risk management
The group is directed by Prof. dr. eng. Alecsandru Pavel and brings together the following members of the teaching staff: Gheorghe Dumitu, Costin Ilinca, Marius Stan, Claudia Niculae, Raluca Vlad. The focus of research includes applying the technical/technological risk analysis to the petrochemical sites, reliability studies, availability and maintenance of the technological equipment, establishing the effectiveness of the technological equipment and quality management of the systems according to ISO 9001:200 and ISO 9001:2002.

“ For a long time Romania used to hold the second place in the world concerning the export of petroleum drilling and drilling production equipment (55% of the USA export!). A lot of the world refineries were planned and built by Romanian specialists as well (for instance Gauhaty, the first Indian refinery!). The teaching staff of our department have contributed to achieving these national successes! ”
